SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS<\/strong><\/p>

PHILIP I. NASON \u201cFIRE SCIENCE PROGRAM\u201d SCHOLARSHIP<\/strong>
Phil Nason was a \u201c25-year career firefighter\u201d with the South Portland Fire Dept. Throughout his career, Phil was a friend and mentor to the career, call, and volunteer firefighters of Maine. He was instrumental in the formation and growth of the Pine Tree Bum Foundation. He served as its leader for 10 years and worked tirelessly with the Maine State Federation of Fire Fighters in support of the Bowling tourneys and the \u201cLearn Not to Burn\u201d program. Phil was the Past President of the York County Firefighters Association and Executive Vice President\/Legislative Liaison Officer for MSFFF. He retired in September 2001. The Philip I. Nason\u201d Fire Science Program \u201cScholarship was established by the MSFFF to honor Phil\u2019s commitment to firefighter training and education in Maine. This Five Hundred Dollar ($500) Scholarship is to assist the selected recipient in furthering his\/her education through the Southern Maine Community College \u201cFire Science Degree Program.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cFIRE ACADEMY SCHOLARSHIP STIPENDS\u201d<\/strong>
Four (4) MSFFF \u201cMFT & E Field Delivery Program\u201d Stipends in the amount of Two Hundred Twenty Five Dollars ($225.00) each are awarded annually by the Federation to support selected participants upon documentation of successful completion of established Maine Fire Training \u201cField Delivery\u201d programs as offered each year by Maine Fire Training & Education.<\/p>

SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA<\/strong>
Scholarship Goal<\/strong>
The intent of the scholarships is to provide financial assistance to Maine firefighters and rescue service members to help facilitate their attendance at MFT & E Programs and\/or the Maine Community College \u201cFire Science Program\u201d. Priority will be given to applicants facing financial barriers to attendance.<\/p>

Application Criteria<\/strong>
Applicant must be a member in good standing of the Maine State Federation of Fire Fighters.
The application should include a cover letter briefly stating the applicant\u2019s intent and financial need, as well as his or her personal goals in the fire service. Also, briefly outline anticipated community and\/or fire service benefits. Documentation of program acceptance\/completion, and a completed application form with the Chief\u2019s endorsement, is also required. Selection Criteria (Applications must be received no later than June 1st)<\/p>

The Scholarship Selection Committee shall choose recipients based on the following criteria:<\/strong><\/p>

Applicant has met the application criteria.
Applicant has demonstrated personal financial need.
Chief has endorsed the application and documented the community\/fire department’s financial need.
The applicant has explained the future benefit to the community and the fire service in general.
Applicant has demonstrated and sustained a high level of commitment to the fire\/rescue service.
